Technology in Dentistry: How Innovation Improves Your Visit

Modern Dental Technology & Better Patient Care

How Modern Dental Technology Improves Your Care

By Dr. Kevin McCurry, Whitney Plaza Dental – Sheridan, WY

I have been practicing dentistry for 37 years. During that time, I’ve earned a Mastership in the American Academy of General Dentistry and a Fellowship from the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies.

Dentistry has changed dramatically over the last four decades – and that’s a good thing. The technology available to dentists today allows us to diagnose earlier, treat more precisely, improve comfort, and deliver longer-lasting results. In my opinion, when dentists fail to keep up with these advancements, it puts their patients at a disadvantage.

Below is an overview of the technology we use and why it matters to you as a patient.

Dental Loupes (Dentist and Hygienist)

Magnification loupes may seem simple, but they are foundational to quality dentistry. They allow both dentists and hygienists to see fine details that are impossible to detect with the naked eye. This leads to more precise diagnoses, better margins on restorations, and gentler, more thorough cleanings. Better vision equals better dentistry – plain and simple.

Intraoral Cameras & Extraoral Photography

An intraoral camera allows you to see exactly what I see. Cracks, decay, failing restorations, and gum issues can be shown in real time on a screen. Extraoral photography helps us document facial structure, bite relationships, and cosmetic considerations. Together, these tools improve communication, transparency, and treatment planning – no more guessing or “just trusting.”  You see what we see!

CEREC & CAD/CAM Technology

CEREC and CAD/CAM dentistry have revolutionized crowns and restorations. We can digitally design and fabricate high-quality ceramic restorations in a single visit. This means fewer appointments, no temporary crowns, and extremely precise fits. Patients benefit from stronger restorations, better aesthetics, and save time.  I have been placing Cerec same day crowns for close to 30 years.

CBCT (Cone Beam 3D Imaging)

Traditional X-rays are two-dimensional and are still of diagnostic value.  However, a CBCT provides a three-dimensional view of your teeth, bone, nerves, and airways. This technology is invaluable for implant planning, evaluating infections, impacted teeth, TMJ issues, and airway concerns related to sleep apnea. Better imaging means safer, more predictable outcomes.

Laser Dentistry

Dental lasers allow us to treat soft tissue with incredible precision. Lasers reduce bleeding, minimize discomfort, speed healing, and often eliminate the need for sutures. They are especially useful for gum therapy, bacterial reduction, and certain surgical procedures. Patients typically experience less pain and faster recovery.

Cavitron Ultrasonic Scaling

Cavitron technology uses ultrasonic vibrations to remove plaque and heavy tartar (calculus).  In combination with traditional hand scaling more effective treatment is accomplished.  It aids in better periodontal care while reducing strain on both the patient and clinician.  With that said, hand scaling from an experienced hygienist is still the gold standard as a Cavitron is an adjunct to treatment.

Digital Radiographs

Digital X-rays use significantly less radiation than older film systems and provide instant, high-resolution images. They allow for enhanced diagnostics, easier image sharing, and better long-term record keeping. The benefit to patients is improved safety, accuracy, and efficiency.

Steam Sterilization & Infection Control

Modern steam sterilization systems are the gold standard in infection control. They ensure that all instruments are thoroughly cleaned, disinfected, and sterilized between patients. This is not an area where shortcuts are acceptable. Advanced sterilization technology protects both patients and staff.

T-Scan Bite Analysis

Your bite matters more than most people realize. The T-Scan system digitally measures bite force and timing, something that cannot be accurately assessed by feeling alone. This technology helps diagnose bite imbalances that can lead to broken teeth, jaw pain, headaches, and TMJ disorders. Correcting these issues improves comfort and longevity of dental work.

BioPak

BioPak allows us to measure jaw position, muscle activity, and joint function objectively. This is essential in physiologic dentistry and TMJ treatment. By understanding how your muscles and joint’s function, we can design treatments that reduce strain, improve comfort, and prevent long-term damage.

iTero Digital Scanning

iTero replaces messy traditional impressions with fast, accurate digital scans. These scans improve comfort, accuracy, and communication. They are used for crowns, bridges, orthodontics, and bite analysis. Patients appreciate the comfort; dentists appreciate the precision.

Modern Dental Materials: Composite & Porcelain

Today’s composites and porcelain are stronger, more aesthetic, and more biologically compatible than older materials. They allow us to preserve more natural tooth structure while achieving excellent durability and appearance.  In contrast, older metal alloys (mercury amalgam, and metal crowns) are inferior and outdated for most applications.  Dentistry should look natural and function naturally.

Why This All Matters

Technology does not replace skill or experience – it enhances them.  When used properly, modern dental technology leads to earlier diagnosis, more conservative treatment, greater comfort, and longer-lasting results. After nearly four decades in dentistry, I firmly believe that staying current is not optional; it is a responsibility to our patients.

At Whitney Plaza Dental, our commitment is to combine experience, education, and technology to deliver the highest standard of care possible. Your oral health – and overall health – deserve nothing less.
